How to choose the right treatment for your dog
Your dog hates spot-on treatments
Oral chews like Bravecto Chew and NexGard Spectra are a great alternative. They're flavoured and most dogs take them readily. The added benefit is they can't be rubbed or washed off — useful for dogs that swim regularly.
You want the least frequent dosing
Bravecto Spot-On is dosed every six months — the least frequent treatment available. Bravecto Chew is dosed every 12 weeks. Both are significantly less frequent than monthly products, which is ideal if you find it hard to keep track of schedules.
Your dog also needs worm and heartworm protection
Choose an all-in-one product. NexGard Spectra, Advocate, Simparica Trio, and Moxiclear all cover intestinal worms and heartworm in a single monthly dose — no separate wormer needed.
Your dog has a tick risk (bush walks, rural areas)
Paralysis ticks aren't established in New Zealand, but brown dog ticks and bush ticks are present. Bravecto, NexGard Spectra, Frontline Plus, Seresto, and Simparica Trio all offer tick coverage.
You have a puppy
Most treatments are safe from 8 weeks of age and a minimum weight of around 2–2.5 kg depending on the product. Always check the label. NexGard Spectra and Advocate are popular choices for puppies as they also treat the intestinal worms young dogs frequently carry.
You have a large or extra-large breed
All products in our range are weight-dosed, so you'll simply select the pack size appropriate for your dog. We stock sizes covering dogs from 2 kg up to 50+ kg across most brands.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I treat my dog for fleas?
Most monthly treatments need to be applied every 28–30 days. Bravecto Chew is dosed every 12 weeks and Bravecto Spot-On every 6 months. Consistent treatment year-round is recommended in New Zealand due to the relatively warm climate.
Do I need to treat my dog for worms separately?
Not if you use an all-in-one product. NexGard Spectra, Advocate, Simparica Trio, and Moxiclear all include intestinal worm and heartworm cover. If you use a flea-only product like Bravecto or Frontline Plus, you will need to add a separate wormer such as Drontal every 3 months.
Can my dog swim after a spot-on treatment?
Most spot-on treatments recommend keeping your dog dry for 24–48 hours after application. After that they are water-resistant but not fully waterproof — very frequent swimming can reduce effectiveness. If your dog swims often, an oral chew like NexGard Spectra or Bravecto Chew is a better choice.
What's the difference between Bravecto Chew and Bravecto Spot-On?
Both protect against fleas and ticks, but differ in format and duration. The chew is dosed every 12 weeks. The spot-on is applied to the skin at the back of the neck and lasts 6 months. Neither covers intestinal worms, so a separate wormer is needed if worm cover is required.
Is NexGard Spectra better than Advocate?
Both are effective all-in-one monthly treatments. NexGard Spectra is an oral chew that also covers ticks. Advocate is a spot-on that does not cover ticks but does cover lungworm, which NexGard Spectra does not. The right choice depends on your dog's specific risk profile.
What age can puppies start flea treatment?
Most treatments are safe from 8 weeks of age and a minimum bodyweight of around 2–2.5 kg depending on the product. Always check the label. NexGard Spectra and Advocate are commonly recommended for puppies as they also treat the intestinal worms young dogs frequently carry.
Can I use dog flea treatment on my cat?
No. Never use dog flea treatments on cats. Many dog products — particularly those containing permethrin — are highly toxic to cats and can be fatal. Always use a product specifically formulated for your pet's species.
Do I need a vet prescription for these products?
Most flea and worm treatments in our range are available over the counter in New Zealand without a prescription. All products we stock are approved for sale in NZ and safe to use as directed on the label.
How quickly do flea treatments work?
Oral treatments like NexGard Spectra begin killing fleas within 30 minutes and eliminate most within 4–8 hours. Bravecto Chew kills fleas within 2 hours. Spot-on treatments typically take 24–48 hours to reach full effectiveness as the active ingredient distributes across the skin.
What if I miss a dose?
Treat as soon as you remember, then reset your schedule from that new date. A gap in treatment means your dog is temporarily unprotected, so acting promptly matters — particularly if your dog has been exposed to other animals or outdoor environments during the gap.
