Droncit treats Dipylidium caninum, commonly known as flea tapeworm. Dogs become infected by swallowing an infected flea while grooming, biting or chewing at itchy skin.
Treating the tapeworm without addressing the flea problem can lead to rapid reinfection. Dogs with flea tapeworm should therefore receive effective flea treatment alongside Droncit.
Taenia ovis
Droncit treats Taenia ovis, the tapeworm responsible for sheep measles. This is particularly relevant for farm dogs or dogs that may have access to raw sheep meat, carcasses or offal.
Elanco New Zealand recommends monthly treatment for Taenia ovis control in at-risk farm dogs.
Other Susceptible Tapeworms

What Droncit Does Not Treat
Droncit is a tapeworm treatment only. It does not treat:

How to Give Droncit
General New Zealand Dose
For general tapeworm treatment in New Zealand, administer Droncit according to your dog’s current body weight:
- Dogs weighing up to 10kg: Give ½ tablet.
- Dogs weighing 11kg to 20kg: Give 1 tablet.
- Dogs weighing over 20kg to 40kg: Give 2 tablets.
For dogs weighing more than 40kg, continue dosing at the New Zealand rate of one tablet per 20kg body weight or follow the product leaflet and veterinary advice.
The tablet count printed on shared New Zealand and Australian packaging may differ because Australia uses a higher dose for hydatid tapeworm risk. For general tapeworm treatment in New Zealand, Elanco specifies one tablet per 20kg.
Administration
Give the required amount as a single oral dose. Droncit may be:
- Given directly by mouth
- Hidden in a small amount of food
- Administered immediately before a meal
- Given with a meal
Fasting is not required.
Treatment Frequency
Droncit should not automatically be described as providing three months of prevention. It treats susceptible tapeworms present at the time of dosing, but dogs can become reinfected afterwards.
For general household pets, treat when tapeworm segments are seen or according to the schedule recommended by your veterinarian. At-risk farm dogs requiring Taenia ovis control should generally be treated monthly.
